The opportunity
ING Domestic Bank NL is looking for a passionate and inspiring Architect. The CoE Architects in Amsterdam is a vibrant place for anyone who is willing and capable of translating ING's vision into architecture designs and guides the strategy execution. In Architecture we have the ambition to design the capabilities that make up the digital platform bank of tomorrow, influencing the business strategy towards an optimal execution path for delivery of a secure and reliable platform to ultimately deliver great services to our customers.
We have an open spot for an architect for Digital Channels (web and app) closely collaborating with other channel and products domain architects. Together you will deliver architectural guidance for the bank of the future according to our strategy. In which we promised to improve our product offering to meet our customers financial needs and accelerate digitisation and personalised experience.
The team
You will be part of the CoE Architects and work together in a small team of architects, led by one of our enterprise architects. You will work closely with business colleagues, architects, business analysts, IT managers and IT squads to create architecture results. When applicable you will work with ING colleagues from other (also global) areas to ensure alignment. Working at ING means working in a dynamic and international setting.
Roles and responsibilities
You will define and maintain the end-to-end architecture design for your domain. In your designs, you prioritize robustness, resilience, security and reliability. You will use and build upon already existing architectural principles, standards and guidelines in your work. You will specify practical transition steps towards a target architecture, in a complex landscape that is constantly changing. You strike the right balance between feasible to implement, yet ambitious enough to move towards our strategic target architecture.
Architecture governance is an important part of your job. In this context you document agreements with stakeholders on certain solutions, and deviations from architecture. Furthermore, you verify whether the solutions implemented comply with the upfront agreed architecture. In addition to the domain responsibility, you also contribute to the continuous improvement of the team and CoE Architects, so we get better every day than the day before.
We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious. Keep learning. Take on responsibility. In return, we’ll back you to develop into an even more awesome version of yourself.
How to succeed
You are good at many of the skills needed for creating robust digital software systems: data modelling, distributed computing, RESTful APIs, synchronous vs asynchronous systems, an understanding of risk metrics, security, reliability, good understanding of mobile and web application designs.
You have great analytical skills, which you use to get to the root of problems and find applicable architectural solutions. Sometimes the information at hand could be incomplete: here you show your logical and analytical skills to quickly find the missing information, or to make reasonable assumptions to proceed.
Getting things done – you agree upon a definition of done, see solutions through to completion, visualize and document the results, and get it aligned with stakeholders.
See the big picture – you are able to see how a particular system or design fits within the whole. You understand and explain trade-offs in design options, keeping the big picture in mind.
Quick learner – you are able to quickly understand new concepts, see patterns, and apply them to your solutions and designs in a practical way.
Initiative – you can take initiative and can work independently to perform architecture activities for incremental changes in an agile software development environment.
Team player – you can listen well, embrace diversity, and proactively seek collaboration with others to co-create architecture (workshops, guiding, constraining, selling, telling).
You have strong communication skills both verbal and written, in English. Your stakeholders have different backgrounds varying from business to technical to architectural. Your ability to get alignments by adapting your story to the audience is crucial for success in this role.
Nice to have: knowledge of public cloud architectures, and productizing of digital applications to be used in multiple countries’ contexts.
