Selection procedure

On the ING traineeship, there are nine tracks to choose from: Retail Banking, Business Banking, HR, Wholesale Banking, Finance, Risk , Tech, Analytics and Operations & Change. Once you’ve decided which track suits you best, the next step is to submit your application for the International Talent Programme (ITP) . Simply apply online for a current trainee vacancy within the track of your choice and convince us of your potential. Your application marks the start of the selection procedure, which can last between four to six weeks. The actual traineeship programme starts twice a year: in April and October.

General outline of the selection procedure:

YOU

You apply by submitting your cv, motivational questions and grade lists.

ING

We will assess your application. If we see a potential match, you will receive a short introduction call.

Is the call positive? We will invite you to our online assessments.

YOU

You take an online assessment, which consists of three tests and takes approximately 30 minutes. Two of the tests will assess if you align with ING culture and one test will measure your numerical, abstract and verbal reasoning. After completing this assessment, you’ll receive a report with insights into your different talents and potential challenge areas at work.

Start of your traineeship

Step 1: Evaluation of your curriculum vitae, motivational questions and qualifications

Send us your CV, answers to the motivational questions, Bachelor, (provisional) Master certificates and grade lists.

We will carefully consider your application and let you know whether you are invited to the next step of the selection procedure.

Step 2: Online Assessment

Step 2A: Do you fit in the ING culture?

In the first test we will assess your suitability for the role based on your responses to a series of decision-making scenarios that trainees are likely to face in the ING workplace. You are required to rate the effectiveness of a number of different responses to these scenarios, giving us insight into how well you are aligned with the ING culture.

Step 2B: Do you have the analytical capabilities?

In the second test we assess your overall intellectual ability:

  • your ability to understand, interpret and evaluate written information
  • your ability to understand, interpret and evaluate numerical data
  • your ability to understand sequences of patterns and relationships

Step 2C: Do you suit the ING traineeship profile?

The third test measures your cultural fit with ING, our Orange Code behaviors and competencies we value in trainees. ING’s Orange Code is all about this: Take it on and make it happen, Help others to be successful and Stay a step ahead.

After completing all three assessments, you will receive a report with advice. Regardless of whether you go through to the next round! This report will give insights into your different talents and potential challenge areas at work.

Once you positively completed all the tests you go the next round: the HR interview.

Step 3: HR Interview

If you’ve passed the online assessments, we will invite you for an interview with an HR trainee manager and a current trainee. The results from the online assessments are used as the basis for the interview. We are looking for trainees who have specific competencies in line with the ING Orange Code, so our primary aim during the HR interview is to gain insight into your competencies. Of course, we’ll also ask about your motivation for ING and the track you are applying for.

The HR interviews are held in Amsterdam. In some cases we can make exceptions for candidates from abroad to be interviewed by Teams/telephone. Interviews are conducted in either Dutch or English. A few days after the HR interview, we will call you with feedback and let you know whether you are through to the next step of the selection procedure: the Business Panel Interview.

Step 4: Business Panel Interview

The final step in the selection procedure for the ING traineeship is the Business Panel Interview where you meet two representatives of ING’s senior management from your chosen track plus the HR trainee manager. This is your moment to shine – this is the opportunity to share and showcase your unique skills and talents and to pose your burning questions to our senior leaders.

If you successfully complete the selection procedure, you will receive a job offer from ING immediately and you can sign the official contract shortly afterwards.

We can only accept applications that include all the required information. Please make sure you have submitted all the required information: your CV, (provisional) lists of grades for Bachelor and Master degrees, and answers to the motivational questions.
