Discover yourself, choose your change

“I wanted a career centred around people. And I wished to work abroad.”
When Lisa, a 25-year-old Belgian, graduated from Antwerp Management School with dual master’s degrees in Multilingual Professional Communication and Strategic Human Resource Management, she knew her path would begin in HR for certain. “What I wasn’t sure of at that moment was which part of Human Resources would be my true passion.”
That quest led her to the ING International Talent Programme (ITP), a decision that would set her on a path of personal and professional growth.

A self-discovery journey

“When I joined ITP, it felt like the world really opened up for me,” Lisa reflects. “I knew I wanted to work in an international business setting, but I wasn’t sure which area of HR would suit my passion the most. After my first interview with the recruiter, though, I knew ING was the right fit. She is super kind and her approach made it clear this was where I belonged. ITP gave me the chance to explore different teams, helping me discover my strengths and what truly excites me.”

Currently she is in the HR communication team, responsible for both internal and external communication. This includes employer branding as well as all internal communication about HR initiatives. Once she finishes the second rotation, her future remains open but one thing is clear; she’s discovered her passion for HR communications. And the next chapter is bound to be even more exciting.

“My career journey with ITP is like learning to walk for the first time,
each step strengthens my confidence as I push past new limits.”

“I didn’t know how much I would enjoy this area of HR,” she says. “But now I realise that I can’t step away from communication. It’s something I will always keep as part of my career.”

With the chance to learn and grow within ING, Lisa is excited about what’s to come. “The programme has shown me that success isn’t just about reaching a big goal; it’s about celebrating the small wins along the way. I am trying different things, working with incredible people, every step is building the foundation for my future career.”

Towards the challenge

“One of my biggest challenges so far is being part of the team organising the communication around the launch of Workday, a new HR ecosystem that will impact every ING Belgium employee.”

This large-scale project, spanning five main buildings and several days of events, is something Lisa describes as both challenging and rewarding.

“This project has a lot of moving parts, incredibly intense,” she explains. “But the sense of accomplishment I'll have once it's successfully launched will be immense. It's incredibly fulfilling to know that I'm playing a key role in something that impacts our entire organisation.”

A co-writing story that continues

Lisa believes ITP is her best career choice not only for the opportunities of exploring but also for the strong network she’s built along the way.

“Being part of the HR communications team means I interact with various teams across the HR department of ING, which helps me build relationships with so many people. This network is already helping me grow faster than I would in a regular position.”

“Before ITP, I thought content was all that mattered in a job.
Now, I know that having a supportive and positive team is equally crucial.
It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me throughout my career.”

Currently, Lisa is also working on a 2024 video campaign for recruitment. A project close to her heart, as she knows firsthand how impactful the programme can be. “When I was applying, I had a hard time getting a concrete idea of what the ITP actually involved. Now I can add my personal touch for future candidates, and that’s something I’m really proud of.”

A message for the future ITP community

For those who are still considering ITP, Lisa has three key pieces of advice; “First, create your own opportunities. Don’t wait for them to come to you. Second, network! Make sure you don’t limit yourself to just one team or area. And finally, have fun! This is a unique time in your career where you get to choose what you enjoy.”
