For ING's Supervisory, Public and Regulatory Affairs (SuPRA) department we are looking for an External Relations Advisor to join our team in a hybrid capacity focusing on both Supervisory Affairs and Regulatory Affairs.

You will enhance supervisory engagement by: strengthening effective relationships with our main financial supervisors and other relevant stakeholders; contributing to effective and efficient coordination between ING’s retail countries and other local ING franchises; and (pro)actively engaging with industry associations and a wider stakeholder network. The primary areas of focus are on on business conduct and AML supervision.

The team

ING’s Supervisory, Public and Regulatory Affairs (SuPRA) is a specialised department of highly motivated professionals, working in a dynamic and collaborative environment. SuPRA is responsible for maintaining and continuously improving ING’s engagement with regulators, policy makers and supervisors. Our department is also responsible for advocacy on policy and regulatory developments, and we position ING on political and societal topics.

Roles and responsibilities

As an External Relations Advisor you will be responsible for pursuing ING strategic advocacy goals, through:

  • Strengthening coordination between key retail countries, with a focus on conduct and AML supervision. The area of focus is subject to change depending on the regulatory and supervisory calendar and priorities;

  • Developing and rolling out the supervisory and regulatory engagement/ strategy wrt Retail & Conduct; and

  • Steering the relationship with EU regulators and local supervisors while building internal networks to share experiences and further develop ING’s strategy.

Further, you will advise internal stakeholders, streamline cooperation, and improve working arrangements:

  • Focus on maintaining local responsibilities by setting up minimal engagements, monthly coordination meetings and strengthening reporting;

  • Write and coordinate briefings on key topics and action points to ensure consistency of messaging across ING;

  • Supervisory communication: pro-actively communicate with supervisors, and ensure internal communication on supervisory topics on relevant incoming and outgoing communication vis-à-vis supervisors; and

  • Monitoring / track & trace open findings / remediation progress (including improvement of tooling).

How to succeed

The following knowledge, skills and experience are needed to succeed in this role:

  • Understanding our stakeholders: preferably through having worked with or for governments, supervisors, or industry associations.

  • Understanding our business: thorough understanding of banking.

  • Strategic mindset: looking ahead to future opportunities and risks and translating these into a structured plan.

  • Managing stakeholders: anticipating and balancing the needs of multiple internal and external stakeholders.

  • Speaking up: daring to challenge opinions and decisions of internal stakeholders including senior management.

  • Building trust: gaining the confidence and trust of others through honesty, integrity, and authenticity.

  • Excellent English language skills (both spoken and written).

  • Master’s degree and more than 5 years’ work experience post graduation.

  • Desirable: an understanding of the regulatory and supervisory landscape that ING and its franchises operate under.

Sensitive Position

This vacancy is deemed ‘sensitive’. This means extra security clearance is required by Corporate Special Investigations (CSI). Only after a positive CSI clearance, the person is allowed to be appointed to this position.
