Finance traineeship

The fast track to your future as a Chief Financial Officer

The Finance traineeship at ING prepares you for a future role as a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). A lot of applicants confuse this track with the traineeship in Wholesale banking. But make no mistake: this Finance traineeship is all about the internal financial processes, and not about making external financial proposals to clients. On this track within the ING International Talent Programme you’ll develop your financial knowledge and agility, both in analysing internal data from the past for the company and presenting figures for the future to senior management. This traineeship will learn you all about how businesses are performing inside the bank, this while working with complex computational models to prepare reports for the management team.

You’ll be in regular contact with members of ING’s senior management team right from the start. For example, during lunches with one of the CFOs.

Make a real difference as a trainee

As a trainee, you’ll discover first-hand what it’s like to work in a complex, international environment. A master’s degree is a key requirement for a Finance traineeship, preferably in accountancy & control, (business) economics, finance, business administration or business studies. We expect you to take the initiative to shape your own career; to be eager to learn and to take an entrepreneurial approach. We expect you to develop, and share, your own vision. We are eager to see you deliver results – all right from day one of your traineeship. As a trainee within ING, you can make a real difference.

Your first rotation: the fundamentals of finance

Your talent manager will define your first rotation within the Finance traineeship with you. Usually your first rotation will be done in Accounting and Reporting or in the Financial Business Advice (FBA) department. We will, of course, take into account your personal preferences, your learning objectives and the current opportunities within the company. Your first rotation will learn you the fundamentals of finance and lay the first cornerstone for your career at ING. No matter which project you begin with, you will learn a lot rapidly and you’re given plenty of responsibility right from day one.

Your second rotation: expanding your financial knowledge

In your second rotation, which will be in Accounting and Reporting or in the Financial Business Advice (FBA) department (based on your first rotation), you’ll expand your knowledge of Finance. We’ll support you in looking into the other areas within Finance in order to get a broader understanding of the finance discipline.

A third rotation of 3 to 6 months abroad

During your third rotation, you will have the opportunity to join the daily life of a Finance team abroad. Many of our trainees choose to go to Amsterdam, Singapore, London or New York, where you can put the knowledge you gained during your first and second rotations at ING in Belgium to good use. One of your rotations can be done in a different track, to give you the opportunity to experience and make impact on our clients, products or processes from a different angle. For example: as an Operations & Change or Retail Banking trainee you can get Analytics experience, or as a Risk trainee you can get a better understanding of our Wholesale Banking business. The possibilities are endless.

Your first permanent job

In your first permanent job, you’ll enhance your knowledge and hone your skills. You can choose to work within one of ING’s specific business lines, such as in the Management Accounting or Financial Accounting departments, or perhaps you prefer to work at a corporate level in Capital Management, Regulatory Reporting, Policies & Procedures or Finance Bank Treasury.

Shape your own career

These roles are just a handful of examples to illustrate possible career paths within ING. You will be provided with support to help you make the right decisions in line with your goals.

We offer you the chances, tools and the facilities to make your traineeship a success.

General and specialized training courses

The point of being a trainee is to learn a lot, and we offer you every opportunity to do so. All trainees at ING participate in our global learning events. You learn about every aspect of core banking, such as the role of a bank, the bank balance sheet, bank funding, IT processes and risk management. Needless to say, these events also help you to develop your soft skills such as business partnering, stakeholder management and presentation techniques. Furthermore, we offer a broad spectrum of training opportunities that are aligned with your specific development needs.

Finance trainees follow a specific training programme for the Finance discipline including CFA I. You can supplement this with further study, such as for CIMA or RC.
