A place to innovate
I loved the way the program was pitched when I was looking at career options – an innovative bank with agile ways of working. That really resonated with me. Once you get here, they definitely walk the walk. It’s very multi-disciplinary. I often forget I work at a bank.
On the job learning and supportive leaders
One of the best things about the program is the level of autonomy and trust you have from day one. I’m on the Retail track, and my first four months in the Wealth Tribe was a real eye opener as I had to quickly learn about superannuation and insurance – products I had little experience of. It felt a bit daunting, but the support I’ve had from leaders has inspired me to build my confidence and continue to push myself. To be able to learn from those around you is everything to a grad.
International exposure
For me, a big drawcard was the opportunity for international assignments. I’m part of a cohort of more than 100 graduates based around the world. Despite the impact of Covid, we’ve still managed to build our own virtual community to stay connected and support each other. We even follow each other on Instagram! We’re all keeping our fingers crossed that restrictions will ease and we’ll meet in person soon.
Taking it on and make it happen
The grad program is set up in four-month rotations. After working in the Wealth Tribe, I wanted to explore lending my talents to the Innovation team – that’s my passion. I asked ING’s Innovation Lead for a coffee catch up and the rest is history. In the short time I’ve been here I’ve worked on a business-wide innovation project and presented to more than 150 people. It’s amazing to have that level of responsibility. Looking ahead, I’d like to get experience in other business areas to better understand our product range, and spend time with the ING NEO global innovation team in Amsterdam. Maybe next year.
Advice for others
If you’re a grad looking for hands on experience from day one, definitely check out the program. International assignments are a huge drawcard, as is the learning support available – I’ve already done a service design course, and I’m looking at scrum training next. I’m also amazed by how inclusive the ING culture is. I’ve always felt extremely welcome. It makes you want to stay and work here.
